Build the sophisticated mathematical thinking required for the highest levels of the HSC. Our Preliminary Extension course develops a deep, abstract understanding of key concepts, giving you a powerful head start for Year 12.
Updated for the new NESA syllabus
Mathematics Extension 1 11–12 (2024)
— first HSC examination 2027
Inverse trigonometric functions and rates of change move out of Year 11 into Year 12; combinatorics splits into permutations and combinations and the binomial theorem.
This course is designed for talented and passionate mathematics students who want to excel.
We go through the Advanced curriculum and the extend to explore more complex topics, focusing on rigorous proof, abstract problem-solving, and a fluent command of mathematical logic.
This course includes the Preliminary Advanced content, ensuring you master all the necessary content to thrive in both Extension 1 or Extension 2 HSC courses in Year 12.
Our curriculum covers the Preliminary Advanced syllabus in full, plus the specialised Extension topics:
All Maths (Adv) Topics
Polynomials (Advanced theory and graphing)
Graphing Techniques (Transformations and analysis)
Trigonometric Functions (Further identities and equations)
Combinatorics (Permutations and combinations)
Proof by Mathematical Induction
Students must be studying the Preliminary Mathematics Advanced course concurrently. A very high level of achievement in Year 10 Mathematics (5.3 / Advanced pathway) is essential.
This course is the essential first step for students aiming for the most competitive and quantitative university degrees, including Actuarial Studies, Advanced Science, Theoretical Physics, Data Science, and elite Engineering programs.
It solidifies your intention to pursue HSC Maths Extension 1 and Extension 2.
Mastering the Preliminary Extension content is the single best predictor of success in the high-scaling HSC Extension 1 and 2 courses.
This course builds the critical thinking and problem-solving resilience needed to tackle the most challenging HSC questions, setting you on the path to a top-tier ATAR.
Mathematics Extension 1 is a very high-scaling subject. Along with Extension 2 and certain languages, it consistently sits near the top of the UAC scaling report.
The course is extremely demanding, and this is reflected in how well it scales. A raw mark of 40/50 (E3 band) in Extension 1 has historically scaled to a similar level as a high Band 6 in many other subjects.
Excelling in Maths Extension 1 provides a significant boost to your ATAR.

Intuition's 3-Step Cycle
Our proven 3-step cycle not only helps student's build confidence but provides them an effective framework that ensures students don’t just learn - they master.
Every week, students attend class led by expert teachers who break down the NESA syllabus with clarity and
structure. They teach not just lecture.
Practice
After the weekly class, students complete structured homework that builds from fundamentals to high-level
exam-style questions. This ensures that what’s learned in class is actively applied and retained.
Consolidate
True progress happens when students revisit, reflect on, and correct their mistakes. Our consolidation step
ensures they don’t just move on — they master what they’ve learned.
Structured week-by-week topic schedules aligned to the NSW NESA syllabus. We teach each concept 3–4 weeks ahead of school, giving you the time to master theory, complete weekly practice, and prepare for school exams.

More Information & FAQs
At Intuition our classes teach all the Maths you need. For instance if you are learning Maths (Ext 1) then you are really doing two different subjects, Maths (Adv) and Maths (Ext 1). At Intuition you just come to one class, our Maths (Ext 1) class.
This class will teach you both Maths (Adv) and Maths (Ext 1) content. This means that you only need to come to one class for your maths needs. This allows us to ensure you are supported in a holistic level.
Our courses require a significant commitment. For this reason, all enrolments attend a personalised face-to-face or online enrolment meeting.
The purpose of this meeting is to ensure that the student and parents understand the course, the commitment required and how to make the most of the experience. We also use this opportunity to answer any questions and address any concerns.
Several tutoring colleges offer a similar service but there are none that do it quite like Intuition. We don't skip steps or take shortcuts; we do what is in the best interest of our students and we always recognise that each student is an individual with individual needs. While we provide a structured, three-step learning cycle for our core course content, we also flexibly offer multiple course options so that students can find the right individual fit.
We also don’t just see ourselves as tutors; we see ourselves as developing the young leaders of tomorrow and our vibrant and energetic staff drive us daily on this path. Many of our staff members have completed an Intuition course themselves and are shining examples of our proven systems.
It’s important to note that our prices are all-inclusive. Students do not pay for extra help at Intuition. This is in stark contrast to our competitors who charge more for additional services, or simply do not offer them at all. Intuition offers extra tutorials, one-on-ones, additional materials, marking of homework for all year cohorts, help with schoolwork, and access to our unique online Ask-a-Tutor service.
Schoolwork always takes priority but students that study at Intuition will be better equipped to tackle their schoolwork and achieve exam success. Our programs are structured to ensures every syllabus requirement is covered, reinforcing core concepts and maximising studying efficiency, while also providing stretch opportunities.
We also flexibly offer multiple course options so that students can find the right individual fit.
Our materials methodically cover the NSW Educational Standards Authority (NESA) syllabus providing both sound theoretical grounding and extensive practical exposure.
Our resource team ensures that all our materials are regularly annotated and updated in line with the latest curriculum changes.
